Fall Capsule Wardrobe (& Winter) for Women [with links]
Using this fall capsule wardrobe will simplify your mornings while leveling up your style. Look great every single day with ease.
I’m ready for easier mornings – how about you? Choosing an outfit that looks great doesn’t have to drag you down or cost a fortune. I’ve been using a capsule wardrobe off and on for years, and every time I do I remember why I love it so much.
Pin the fall capsule for later!
Why use a capsule wardrobe
- Every outfit is coordinated and stylish. You’ll become one of those women who always looks put together.
- One less decision to make every day. Use this capsule wardrobe design and just loop through the outfit options in a rotation.
- Overall, the cost is less. I used to buy “great deals” on the clearance rack or online, but they didn’t fit in with the rest of my wardrobe, so I never wore them. With a capsule, you buy a small number of items and wear them all.
- The quality of the items can be higher. Because you are buying so few items, you can spend a little more to get the cashmere sweater instead of the synthetic one. These classic pieces last and are better for your health besides.
Classic tops
This capsule wardrobe contains seven tops and 3 layering pieces. Two of the tops are button-down shirts that can also be layered over or under another item, such as the denim shirt under that cashmere crewneck sweater or over the striped shirt.
(1) Striped Top (similar) // (2) Sweater // (3) Denim shirt (similar) // (4) Gingham shirt
(1) Quilted pullover // (2) Pintuck tunic // (3) Striped sweater
(1) Cardigan (similar) // (2) Blazer // (3) Utility jacket
Versatile bottoms
These bottoms go so easily with each top, you don’t need very many. Tip: if timing of doing the laundry is an issue, purchase a couple of the bottoms you like best.
(1) Leggings (similar) // (2) Cargo pants // (3) Jeans // (4) Pencil skirt
Perfect the look with accessories
The shoes, purse and jewelry can completely change the outfit, so don’t skimp there. Both pairs of booties are on the upper end of what I like to spend on shoes – but they are high quality brands, made from leather, and should last a really long time.
(1) Sneakers (similar) // (2) Pumps // (3) Booties (similar) // (4) Wedge booties (similar) // (5) Necklace // (6) Sling bag
Update: The flat-soled booties are sold out! Here are three alternative options (or check them out here with info on how to where Chelsea boots).

How much will this fall capsule wardrobe cost?
If you buy each and every item at full price, you’d spend a lot. But there is no need to spend that much. Instead, apply these strategies for reducing the cost. I would never advocate for going into debt to purchase your capsule wardrobe.
- Watch for sales! This is so simple, and you rarely have to wait long. Many retailers hold sales every weekend. Bigger sales may be held on holidays (Labor Day is coming up) or at specific times of year. I’m writing this on a Tuesday and sales right now would reduce the cost by $300.
- Shop your closet first. Do you already own a denim shirt or a pair of jeans? No need to buy that item. What about a similar item that could work instead?
- Shop around. Love the cashmere pullover sweater but can’t see spending that much? Buy a synthetic option for less (such as this option at Kohl’s).
- Purchase used. I love finding really high quality items at our local thrift stores, or on eBay or Poshmark. Sometimes, these items can even be new with tags.
Curate a travel capsule wardrobe
Packing for trips becomes so much easier with a capsule wardrobe – after all, pretty much every piece coordinates together. Taking a long weekend trip? Pick three outfits that use overlapping pieces, and you are set. These three outfits would be easy to pack:
Here’s your fall capsule wardrobe checklist:
- Download the eBook and print it out.
- Head to your closet with the book and a pen.
- Check off any items you already own.
- Purchase the remaining items (using the tips to save on cost).
- Use the Outfit Summary pages of the eBook to guide you each morning.
What about next season?
Where I live in Kentucky, we experience all four seasons. When winter is in full force, this capsule will still work for my climate, but I may need a heavier coat and waterproof boots. Then next spring, I plan to swap the tops for some with short sleeves and add some sandals. If you’d like to see the updates, stay connected via my email list and you’ll be the first to know.

Love this capsule wardrobe!
These are such fabulously classic looks!
Thank you!
I have some of these pieces and love the inspiration! Stopping over from Talking About it Tuesday.
Thank you!
That pintuck tunic is absolutely gorgeous! I love my layers in the fall and winter but I really don’t wear button down much so I have just a few that I wear as toppers.
