3 options for the making the bread

Any time a recipe calls for bread dough, I used to assume that it would take many hours to prepare. But it doesn’t have to take any time at all. Here are three options for making the bread dough, based on how much time you have:

  1. Quick: making a loaf of french bread from scratch can be done in 15 minutes, plus an hour of rise time. I use this recipe (it makes 2 small loaves, I use the entire recipe for one loaf of sausage bread).
  2. Quicker: use a loaf of frozen bread dough. It is actually just as quick as the canned, you just have to remember to thaw the dough ahead of time. There are organic options out there now, such as Otto or Fillo Factory (both are available at Whole Foods and other health food stores).
  3. Quickest: use canned pizza dough. No it isn’t organic, but it is quick and a better option than take-out.

My secret ingredient to maximize the flavor

sausage and rosebuds seasoning

Rosebud’s Natural Seasonings had a booth at the homeschool convention I attended this past spring, and their samples were so tasty that I bought a jar of the “I 💜Garlic” so I could replicate the chip dip samples they served.

Rosebud’s is a family-owned business (the owner was running the booth). They only use organic ingredients. The seasonings are in glass jars, which honestly is so hard to find – why must all our food be stored in plastic? And they also use mineral salts. I was really impressed with their products and had a hard time picking which one to purchase.

So that was last spring, and I stuck the bottle of seasoning in my cupboard and life went on. Then I decided to make my sausage bread recipe, and happened to see the bottle on the shelf. Why not try it? Well, let me tell you – I’ve made sausage bread many times, but it never tasted this amazing before. I can’t tell you if it tastes just as good re-heated, because my guys gobbled this up without a crumb to spare.

Do yourself a favor and order a bottle of this seasoning, or try several – they were all delicious. You can get 10% off with coupon code BETHANY.

Can I freeze the sausage bread?

Sausage bread freezes extremely well. After baking, let it cool and then wrap in paper towels and store in an air-tight container. Making two loaves doesn’t take much more time than one – I like to make two and freeze one for a super-easy meal later. This recipe is always a hit at potlucks, which is another reason I like to have a couple in the freezer.

Variations on this versatile recipe

Sausage bread can be served at breakfast, lunch or dinner – it is so versatile! But it is also easily adaptable for your family’s taste preferences:

  • Add crumbled bacon to the sausage
  • Swap out pepperoni or other meats for the sausage
  • Add additional common pizza toppings, like peppers, olives or mushrooms
  • Serve with a side of marinara (or spaghetti) sauce, garlic dipping sauce, or ranch sauce.

Kitchen supplies you need to prepare sausage bread

You’ll need a few kitchen supplies to make this recipe:

Ingredients

The ingredient list for sausage bread is short and sweet.

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage (I like mild)
  • 2 tsp Rosebud’s “I 💜 Garlic” seasoning (you can substitute other seasonings, but why would you – this stuff is amazing!!)
  • Bread dough (1 loaf of frozen dough, 1 can of canned pizza dough, or make it homemade)
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1 – prepare the meat

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Brown the sausage in skillet. Add Rosebud’s seasoning and mix well.

Step 2 – roll out the dough and assemble

Roll dough into a rectangle, approximately 10 inches by 18 inches. Spread sausage along the center of the dough, leaving a 2-3 inch margin around the edge. Spread cheese over the top of the sausage.

Take the short ends of the dough and fold over the top of the sausage and cheese. Then fold the long ends over the top of the short ends and pinch together. Pinch until the seams are firmly closed. If necessary, dip your finger in water, then pinch the seams for a firmer close.
